Yarra Yering Winery History
The history of wine production in Yarra Valley is dated back to the mid 1800’s. Wine was the main export product for the new colony in Victoria. However, in 1920’s the wine industry was halted. The reestablishment of winemaking in the Yarra Valley has been started in early 1970’s.
Dr Bailey Carrodus was one of the first winemakers in the Yarra Valley after 50 years of interruption. He was ideally qualified for the task. Degrees in winemaking and botany, Oxford doctorate in plant physiology. Great education was combined with his passion for delightful wine, food and art. He planted the first 12 hectares of vines in 1969 on the northern slope of the Warramate Hills. Yarra Yering winery was established.
Yarra Yering winery produced the first vintage in 1973. The wine was called Dry Red Wine №1 and №2. Yarra Yering wines started to be very well known internationally for their high quality and distinction. Dr Carrodus’s wines gained their international reputation and commercial success for the next 40 years.
Dr Carrodus transferred his original viticultural and winemaking knowledge and expertise to his successors in early 2000’s. He died in his house at Yarra Yering in 2008. However Yarra Yering winery he established continue to produce high quality delightful wines.
Yarra Yering Winery Cellar Door
Yarra Yering’s cellar door is located in the heart of the Yarra Valley. The cellar door is open 7 days a week. However, the cellar door is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday.
